Dua for Anxiety: How to Calm Anxiety in Islam

How to calm anxiety in Islam. How to deal with stress and anxiety. Powerful Duas for Anxiety.

As you get older, you’ll find that you may not be well equipped to deal with anxiety as you did when you were in your teens or early twenties. You can no longer pull a one-nighter to study for an exam. You’ll prioritise your family and its needs, but this could be driving constant stress and things could start to pile up. The stress from work, finances, etc., can take away the enjoyment of your life. To make matters worse, your ability to deal with stress and anxiety has diminished. Previously we discussed sins that could be blocking rizq and barakah in your life. Today we compiled dua for anxiety that have helped me and many others. The key here is to not just say them but to understand them:

1. Salawat – Sending Peace Upon the Prophet ﷺ to Relieve Anxiety

While not a dua for anxiety itself, it is indeed one of the greatest ways to calm the heart and remove worry is to frequently send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Scholars mention that this act not only draws the mercy of Allah but also removes burdens and invites peace.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Allahumma salli wa sallim wa baarik ‘ala Nabiyyina Muhammad

Meaning:
O Allah, send peace, blessings, and grace upon our Prophet Muhammad.

2. Comprehensive Dua for Anxiety to Seek Protection from Emotional and Mental Distress

This is among the most frequently recited duas by the Prophet ﷺ, especially to seek refuge from deep sadness, anxiety, laziness, and defeat.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wal-‘ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala‘id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal

Meaning:
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debt and being overpowered by men.

3. The Most Powerful Dua to Replace Sadness with Joy and Light from the Qur’an

This was described by the Prophet ﷺ as a dua that, if sincerely said, removes sadness and fills the heart with joy.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Allahumma inni ‘abduka, ibn ‘abdika, ibn amatika, nasiyati biyadik, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadha’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilmi al-ghaybi ‘indak, an taj‘ala al-Qur’ana rabi‘a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa’a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

Meaning:
O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You named Yourself with, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or kept with Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, to make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness, and the reliever of my distress.

4. Dua for Anxiety Relief, Mercy and Total Dependence on Allah

This is one of the “duas of the distressed” recommended by the Prophet ﷺ.

Dua:

Transliteration:

Meaning:
O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, so do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and correct for me all of my affairs. There is no god but You.

5. Remembering the Majesty of Allah in Times of Overwhelm. Best Dua for Anxiety

This dua was recited by the Prophet ﷺ during times of great hardship.

Dua:

Transliteration:

Meaning:
There is no god but Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Lord of the Mighty Throne.

6. Dua for Sufficient Reliance on Allah When Feeling Stressed and Overwhelmed

This is a powerful reminder that Allah alone is enough when burdens feel too heavy.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Hasbi Allah lima ahammani, Hasbi Allah liman hasadani, Hasbi Allah liman kadani, Hasbi Allah liman bagha ‘alayya, Hasbi Allah ‘inda al-mawt, Hasbi Allah ‘inda as-su’al fi al-qabr, Hasbi Allah ‘inda al-mizan, Hasbi Allah ‘inda as-sirat, Hasbi Allah la ilaha illa huwa, ‘alayhi tawakkalt, wa huwa Rabb al-‘Arsh al-‘Azim

Meaning:
Allah is sufficient for me in what worries me, Allah is sufficient for me against the one who envies me, Allah is sufficient for me against the one who plots against me, Allah is sufficient for me against the one who oppresses me, Allah is sufficient for me at the time of death, at the questioning in the grave, at the scale, at the bridge. Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity but Him. I place my trust in Him, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.

7. Dua to Remove Hardship and Invite Abundant Good

This supplication is particularly helpful when anxiety is accompanied by fear of failure or difficulty in decision-making.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Allahumma bika asta‘een wa ‘alayka atawakkal, Allahumma dhallil li su‘bata amri, wa sahhil li mashaqatahu, warzuqni al-khayra kullahu akthar mimma atlub, wasrif ‘anni kulla sharr, Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri ya Kareem

Meaning:
O Allah, I seek Your help and rely upon You. O Allah, make my difficulty easy and simplify its hardship. Grant me all good — more than I ask — and turn away from me every evil. My Lord, expand my chest and ease my task, O Most Generous.

8. Emotional Dua from the Heart – Inspired by the Prophets

A deeply emotional call to Allah using the names of Prophets Dawood and Ayyub, and asking relief like they received.

Dua:

Transliteration:
Ya man raaha ‘abrata Dawood, wa kashafa durr Ayyub, ya Mujib da‘wat al-mudtarin, wa kashif gham al-maghmumin, as’aluka an tufarrij hammi, ya Farij al-ghamm, aj‘al li min amri farajan wa makhrajan, ya Sami‘a kulla shakwa, wa Kashifa kulla karb

Meaning:
O You who relieved the tears of Dawood and removed the hardship of Ayyub, O Answerer of the distressed, and Reliever of the anxious, I ask You to relieve my worry. O Remover of sorrow, grant me relief and a way out. O Hearer of every complaint and Remover of every distress.
